Men's Ice Hockey Players Receive Honors For Excellence In The Classroom

Hartford, Conn. - Trinity College men's ice hockey senior captain defenseman Sam Johnson (Dallas, Texas) was named the 2017 ECAC Award recipient as the College's senior male scholar athlete of the year and joined senior captain forward Ethan Holdaway (Glastonbury, Conn.) on the 2016-17 American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) All-American Scholar Team.  The pair also graced the 2017 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Winter All-Academic Team, along with senior captain forward Sean Orlando (Ivyland, Pa.), senior forward Ryan Cole (Anchorage, Alaska), junior defenseman Griffyn Martin (Southport, Conn.), sophomore forward Blake Delisle (Plano, Texas), and sophomore defensemen Bryce Eviston (Vancouver, British Columbia), and Nick Johnson (Dallas, Texas). 

The Bantams, coached by Matt Greason, finished the 2016-17 season with a 21-7-3 overall record and finished third in the NESCAC with an 11-5-2 league mark.  The Bantams won their their second consecutive NESCAC title with a 5-4 victory in overtime at Hamilton on March 5, and qualified for the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament for the third year in a row.  Trinity downed Plattsburgh State, 4-1, in the opening round, edged Endicott, 2-1, in double overtime in quarterfinals to reach the NCAA Division III Frozen Four in Utica, N.Y. for the second time in three seasons. Trinity defeated St. Norbert, 3-2, in the semifinal round, before falling, 4-1, to Norwich in the finals to finish as the NCAA Division III National Runner-Up.

Johnson recorded eight assists in 2016-17 and scored his only goal of the winter in Trinity's NCAA Semifinal win against St. Norbert to finish the year with nine points while appearing in all 31 games for three points in 25 games for the Bantams this winter.  He is a three-time NESCAC All-Academic selection and was named as Trinity's Bob Harron Award recipient in 2016 as the College's top junior male scholar athlete.  An alum of Plano West High School, Johnson graduated from Trinity in May with a degree in computer science and economics and a minor in mathematics modeling.  He is the son of Ellie and Bob Johnson and the brother of Bantam teammate Nick Johnson.
