Trinity Wins Women's Lacrosse Season Opener Against Stevens

Hartford, Conn. - Senior attacker Kiley Coffey (West Newbury, Mass.) scored six goals to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 15-6 victory over the visiting Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks in women's lacrosse action this evening at Jessee/Miller Field.  Trinity, ranked No. 3 in the nation, was playing its season opener, while the Ducks fall to 2-1.  The Bantams will open New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play on Saturday, March 10 at 1 p.m.  at Williams College.  The Ducks are off until a game against FDU-Florham in Florida on Monday, March 12.

Trinity scored the first three goals of the game and seven of the first eight to lead, 7-1, with 9:13 on the clock.  Senior attacker Grace O'Donnell (Yarmouth, Maine) tallied the first goal of the year from senior tri-captain midfielder Allie Barrett (Concord, Mass.) 3:03 into the contest, and Barrett and Coffey scored the next two. After the first of three Stevens goals by junior midfielder Mackenzie Metzler (Long Valley, N.J.) at the 21:14 mark, Coffey scored twice and O'Donnell and sophomore attacker Ashley Turnbull (Ridgewood, N.J.) scored once for Trinity.  In the final eight minuts before the break, Metzler sandwiched two goals around Coffey's fourth of the first half, and the Bantams went into halftime with an 8-3 lead.  Coffey and senior attacker Jenny Cook (Manhasset, N.Y.) scored twice each in the second half, as the Bantams used a 5-0 run over a span of 7:02 to increasr their advantage to 14-4 with 16 minutes remaining.  The Ducks scored two of the game's final three goals, including the second of two scores after the break by senior midfielder Julianna Ricci (Millersville, Md.). 

Trinity finished with a 32-to-18 shooting edge and forced 19 turnovers while committing just 14.  Barrett finished with two goals, one assist, and team-highs of five ground balls, four draw controls, and three caused turnovers.  Senior attacker Abby McInerney (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) recorded a pair of assists to go with three draw controls, while senior midfielder Georgia Mergner (West Caldwell, N.J.) added a goal and an assist for the Bantams.  Senior defender Victoria Alvarez (Pine Beach, N.J.) had three ground balls and three caused turnovers for the Ducks.  Both senior goalies, Zoe Ferguson (Ridgewood, N.J.) for Trinity and Stephanie Schnelze (Carmel, Ind.) made seven saves.
