Hartford, Conn. - As the winter sports season heads down the home stretch, this year's 21st Bantams of the Week have been named, thanks to their strong performances on the track and wrestling mat. Women's indoor track and field sophomore Katie Marlow-Benedick (Weston, Mass.) and junior wrestler Mason Sangillo (Florham Park, N.J.) have been named as the Bantams of the Week.
Each week, the Trinity athletics website will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes - one male, one female - as the Bantams of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their efforts both on and off the field of competition from the previous week.
Marlow-Benedick set a new college record in the 200-meter dash at the Valentine Invitational, hosted by Boston University over the weekend. It is the second record she has shattered this season so far. Marlow Benedick finished 49th in the 200-meter dash out of over 200 competitors. Her finals time of 25.65 is a new Trinity indoor record, breaking the previous program best of 26.05. The sophomore previously broke the college's 60-meter dash record this winter and has qualified for this weekend's New England Championships in the 200 as well as the 60.
Sangillo went 2-0 over the weekend to help lead the Bantams to a 33-15 victory over Rhode Island College in the team's final tri-match of the season. Both of Sangillo's victories came via hard-fought, decisions. Against Bridgwater State's Tom Arsenault, Sangillo scored the deciding takedown in the second period before forcing a stalling point in the third to come away with a 4-2 victory. Against Ricky Brown of RIC, Sangillo earned a rideout in double-overtime to clinch his victory. Sangillo is now 17-7 on the season.
