Hartford, Conn. – Junior 3B Tyler Buckley went 3-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs and a run scored to help carry the Trinity College baseball team to a 10-6 victory over the visiting Western New England Golden Bears on Tuesday afternoon at Murren Family Field at DiBenedetto Stadium in Hartford. The win moves the Bantams to 14-13 overall while the Golden Bears fall to 22-11 on the year. Trinity picks things back up tomorrow evening for a 5 p.m. game at home versus Roger Williams in a makeup from the game between both sides that was rained out at the beginning of the spring in South Carolina.
Trinity also saw mutiple RBI performances by senior captain RF Christian Orsini (Livingston, N.J.) and classmate 1B Carter Snyder (Lemont, Ill.) who combined for five between them. Senior 2B Cooper Mooney (Southbury, Conn.) and sophomore DH Mack Lauder (Chappaqua, N.Y.) both collected multiple hits on the day for the Bantams as well. Alex Loparco (Riverside, Conn.) led the Golden Bears at the dish with a 2-for-3 performance with three RBIs.
Both teams brought the bats with them, combining for 12 runs through the game's first five innings of play. The Bantams got things going in the home half of the first inning, manufacturing a pair of runs to take an early, 2-0 lead. Buckley scored first on a wild pitch before Orsini drew a bases-loaded walk to bring across Lauder. The Golden Bears answered in the following half inning, however, with a two-run single by Loparco with the bases loaded to knot things at 2-2.
Trinity starter Justin Olson (Avon, Conn.) kept WNE off the scoreboard in the third before Trinity put up a four-spot in the bottom of the inning. Snyder worked a bases-loaded walk that scored Mooney before classmate CF Brendan Pierce (Hingham, Mass.) was awarded home on a Golden Bear balk with the bases loaded. A two-run double off the bat of Buckley, followed by a two-run single by Snyder put the home squad ahead, 6-2, at the end of the third.
WNE once again responded with two more runs in the following half inning thanks to a two-run double to the gap by Jared Rosenblatt (Avon, Conn.) to cut the deficit to 8-4. Another Golden Bear run in the top of the fifth off an RBI-groundout by Jamie Schofield (Darien, Conn.) made it a three-run ballgame.
Buckley doubled again in the bottom of the seventh inning to open up a 9-5 lead but WNE got it back in the top of the eighth on another RBI-single by Loparco. Orsini came up clutch with an insurance RBI in the eighth, smoking a line drive past the second basemen with the infield in to bring home Pierce. Sophomore Andrew DeRoche (North Reading, Mass.), who came on to pitch in the top of the seventh, retired the side in order in the ninth to pick up the three inning save.
