Lexington, Va. - After giving up four runs in the bottom of the first, the Trinity College baseball team put up 15 runs, scoring in all but the first two innings, to defeat the Washington & Lee Generals on Friday afternoon in Lexington, Va. The Bantams conclude their trip south and will return to Hartford with a 7-2 overall record after going 4-2 earlier this week in South Carolina.
The Bantams recorded 20 hits as six players recorded multiple knocks on the day, led by senior tri-captain 1B Johnny Stamatis (Ridgefield, Conn.) who was a perfect 6-for-6 with five runs scored, a double and a triple and two stolen bases. Junior RF Matt Koperniak (Adams, Mass.) and junior tri-captain DH Alex Rodriguez (South Windsor, Conn.) both tallied three hits and three RBIs, while Koperniak blasted a solo home run in the ninth, his first of the year.
Trinty rookie Will Simeone (Milton, Mass.) picked up his first win of the year on the bump, going seven innings while striking out three. The Generals scored four runs in the home half of the first thanks to a pair of run-scoring singles and an RBI-double off the bat of Ryan Monson (Frisco, Texas), but Simeone settled in and held Washington & Lee scoreless through the fifth.
The Bantams scored once in both the third and fourt inning before pouring on four in the fifth to take a 6-4 lead. RBI-singles from junior LF Mack Lauder (Chappaqua, N.Y.) and sophomore C Eric Thronson (McLean, Va.) sandwiched a two-run double from Rodriguez to give the visitors the lead for the first time all afternoon.
Trinity scored two runs in both the sixth and seventh to extend its lead to 10-6 after Washington & Lee scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit to 8-6. After tacking on another in the eighth, the Bantams put up another four-spot in the ninth thanks to Koperniak's solo home run, an RBI-triple off the bat of Stamatis that hit the top of the right-centerfield fence and just missed leaving the park, and a run-scoring single to left from rookie 3B Mike Guanci Jr. (Wakefield, Mass.).
The Bantams return to action on Tuesday for a non-conference matchup on the road at Salve Regina.
