Tufts Trips Up Trinity Field Hockey In Overtime

Hartford, Conn. – Junior midfielder Emily Cannon (Atkindson, N.H.) scored the game-winning goal 6:50 into overtime with a blistering shot from the circle to lead the visiting Tufts University Jumbos to a 2-1 victory over the Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) field hockey action this afternoon on Sheppard Field.  Trinity, ranked No. 15 in the nation, falls to 5-1 overall and 4-1 in the NESCAC, while the No. 17-ranked Jumbos improve to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the league with their fifth win in a row.

Tufts struck first when a hard shot from the circle after a penalty corner by Cannon was redirected by freshman forward Hannah Park (Baltimore, Md.) in front of Trinity junior goalkeeper Anne Marie Scalambrino (Chicago, Ill.) and went past her left side and into the cage.  The score remained the same for the rest of the first half, but Trinity senior co-captain midfielder Haley Thompson (Ipswich, Mass.) blasted in a shot from the circle 5:38 into the second half on a corner that was inserted by junior defender Sarah Duncan (Dedham, Mass.) and stopped cleanly by junior midfielder Julia Rivera (Silver Spring, Md.).  Scalambrino made her only save on a hard shot by Tufts senior co-captain midfielder Rachel Gerhardt (Worcester, Mass.) with seven minutes left in regulation.  Tufts was allowed to play out a penalty corner at the end of regulation, but failed to get a shot off.

In overtime, Jumbo sophomore midfielder Maggie Chapman (St. Louis, Mo.) sent an open shot wide to the right of the cage, and Trinity senior forward Hadley Duncan (Rye, N.Y.) shot just outside the right post on a breakaway in early scoring chances for both teams.  Cannon took the game into her owns hands, dribbling past Trinity defenders in the midfield and sending a rising shot into the upper left corner of the cage from the right edge of the circle for the clincher.  Trinity held an 11-8 edge on shots, as Tufts sophomore Brianne Keenan (Greenland, N.H.) had to make six stops in goal.
