New Haven, Conn. - Freshman Ray Askew (Hamden, Conn.) had 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Albertus Magnus College Falcons to 98-96 overtime win over the visiting Trinity College Bantams in men's basketball action this evening. Trinity drops to 0-1 with the loss in its opener, while the Falcons improve to 1-1.
Trinity led, 39-34, at the half and extended its advantage to 13 with under 13 minutes to play in the second frame. The Falcons used a 10-3 run in a two minute span to get within striking distance for the last ten minutes of play. Trailing, 88-86, with 18 seconds left in the second half, Askew's miss was put back by junior Mike Barber (New Haven, Conn.) to tie the game at 88 with 15 seconds to play. Trinity had a chance on a last-second jumper by senior Paul Rowe (Brooklyn, N.Y.) but it did not fall and the game went into overtime.
Albertus Magnus outscored Trinity, 10-8, in the extra frame, although Rowe had another last-second attempt fall off the mark. Falcon senior forward Francisco Cordova (Windsor, Conn.) scored 17 points, while Rowe notched a game-high 33 points including 17 free throws in 21 tries.
