Hartford, Conn. - Junior guard Brian Ford (Bronx, N.Y.) scored a game-high 24 points, making eight out of 10 shots from the field and six of seven from three-point range, and added six rebounds to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 79-75 win over the NAIA Fisher College Falcons in the opening round of the 2009 Courtyard by Marriott Men's Basketball Tip-Off Tournament this evening at Roger Williams University. Trinity earns the win in its season opener and will face the host Roger Williams Hawks in the tourney finals tomorrow at 3 p.m. Fisher falls to 3-1 and will play Lesley in the consolation game tomorrow at 1 p.m. The Hawks downed Lesley, 76-72, in the other tournament first round game.
The teams traded momentum and the lead several times throughout the second half, after Fisher had taken a 43-37 advantage into the half. Bantam junior forward Luke MacDougall (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) tied the game at 75-75 with 1:34 left with a lay-up, and sophomore forward Jon Pike (Exeter, N.H.) hit a jumper for the game-winning hoop with just under a minute on the clock. Pike finished with 13 points and five boards off the bench, while MacDougall had 11 points and six rebounds, and sophomore guard Salah Abdo (Chelsea, Mass.) dished out a game-high eight assists. Junior Louis Williams (Burlington, Vt.) paced the Falcons with 18 points.
