North Dartmouth, Mass. - Junior guard Jaquann Starks (Hartford, Conn.) made the game-winning free throws with 4.2 seconds left to lead the visiting Trinity College Bantams to an 86-83 victory over the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth Corsairs in the season-opening Hampton Inn Men's Basketball Classic this evening.
After a game-tying jumper by Jordan Rezendes tied the game 83-83, Starks was fouled and calmly sank the clinching shots from the charity stripe. Mass.-Dartmouth threw the ensuing inbounds pass away, and Bantam junior forward Shay Ajayi (Brooklyn, N.Y.) made one of two free throws but Rezendes' three-point try to tie it again did not hit the mark.
Five Bantams finished in double figures in scoring, led by sophomore forward Ed Ogundeko (Brooklyn, N.Y.) with 20 points, Ajayi with 16, and Starks with 13. Ogundeko was 9-for-14 from the field and added a team-high nine rebounds, while Ajayi finished with seven boards, and senior tri-captain center George Papadeas (Athens, Greece) contributed 12 points and eight boards. Trinity senior tri-captain guard Hart Gliedman (New York, N.Y.) had 12 points. Trinity doubled up the Corsairs on the glass, 42-21.
