Hartford, Conn. - Sophomore guard Christian Porydzy (Glastonbury, Conn.) scored a team-high 16 points to lead the Bantams to a 71-69 overtime win against the visiting Regis College Pride in the Trinity College Holiday Men's Basketball Invitational this afternoon at Oosting Gymnasium. The Bantams improve to 8-2 with their fourth consecutive victory, while the Pride fall to 4-5. Westfield State downed St. Joseph's (N.Y.) in the third-place game earlier this afternoon. Trinity will host Keene State in its next game on Wednesday, January 3 at 6 p.m.
Porydzy gave Trinity a 63-60 lead with four seconds left in regulation on a three-pointer and two foul shots in the final minute, but Regis junior guard Tim Broom (Jacksonville, Fla.) banked in a game-tying triple from deep as time expired to force overtime. Porydzy opened the extra session with his fourth trey of the contest to put the Bantams ahead, 66-63, but the Pride tied it at 66-all on three free throws over the next minute. Trinity junior forward Connor Merinder (Andover, Mass.) scored the go-ahead bucket on a put-back with 3:11 on the clock, and classmate Jeremy Arthur (Westbury, N.Y.) drained a long three-pointer from the left win to give the home team a five-point cushion at 71-66 with 2:34 on the clock. Broom connected on his third long ball of the day to cut the Bantam lead to two with 1:21 remaining, and the Pride got the ball back for one last possession but misfired on a pair of three-pointers for the win.
Trinity jumped out to an early 8-0 led on four points each by senior co-captain Eric Gendron (Merrimack, N.H.) and sophomore Kyle Padmore (Milton, Mass.), but Regis fought back and tied it at 8-8 with 13:15 on the clock on a layup by junior forward Shawn Wedderburn (Bronx, N.Y.). The game remained close for the rest of the first half. Sophomore Jadikas Brooks (Elmira, N.Y.) hit a jumper to make the score, 24-20, in Trinity's favor, and Pride senior guard Roger Hamel (answered with the first of his four three-pointers in the final minute to send the teams to intermission with the Bantams leading, 24-23. Trinity sophomore Nick Seretta (Greenfield, Mass.) led all scorers with eight points off the bench in the first half.
Trinity led for the majority of the second half, going ahead by nine points at 47-38 at the 11:03 mark on a put-back by junior center Judah Woney (Harlem, N.Y.), and led, 53-46, with seven minutes left. Broom and Hamel drilled back-to-back three-pointers to cut the Pride deficit to one, and Hamel made another from beyond the arc to give the Pride a 58-57 lead with 3:27 on the clock. Regis junior guard Jordan Seldon (Dorchester, Mass.) made two free throws to give the visitors a 60-58 lead, before Porydzy gave the Bantams back the lead with his trey from far behind the top of the key with 34 seconds left.
Seretta joined Porydzy in double figures for the Bantams with 10 points, while Merinder grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, and Arthur finished with nine points and a game-high six assists. Broom led all scorers with 19 points, while Hamel scored 13 of his 16 after halftime, and Wedderburn came off the Regis bench to score 14 points. Pride junior forward Ademola Afonja (Staten Island, N.Y.) pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds. Arthur, Porydzy, Broom, Westfield State senior guard Alister Williams (Boston, Mass.) and St. Joseph's senior guard Alec Willis (Staten Island, N.Y.) were selected for the all-tournament team.
