Hartford, Conn. – The two-time defending NESCAC Champion Trinity College men’s golf team will look to qualify for its 12th consecutive conference tournament this weekend, hosted by Tufts at Sandy Burr Country Club in Wayland, Mass. Trinity has dominated the NESCAC tournament the past two years, and has had medalist honors at the qualifier and the championship in both 2017-18 and 2018-19. The first round of the 2019 NESCAC Fall Qualifier will begin on Saturday September 28, at 10:18 a.m. The matchup on Sunday (9/28) will be determined by the scores on Saturday, with a tee time set for 10 a.m.
The team with the top score over the two-day, 36-hole qualifier earns the right to host the championship. The top four teams at the qualifier and the top four individuals outside of the top four teams will advance to the 2020 NESCAC Men’s Golf Championship set for April 25-26, 2020. The winner of the NESCAC championship will receive an automatic bid to the 2020 NCAA Division III Men’s Gold Championship. Trinity, ranked No. 17 in the country and led by Matt Greason (7th season), finished top 10 in last year’s NCAA DIII Golf Championship, and is looking to make an appearance for the third year in a row.
The Bantams sport a youthful team this year, and have been led by junior Ricardo Paes Leme (Lake Villa, Ill.), who has already taken home an individual crown this year at the Bill Detrick Invitational. Leme tied for third in the Williams Fall Invitational with a score of 71, and has led the team in every contest this season. Rookie Nicholas Li (Vancouver, British Columbia) has adjusted to the collegiate level very well, tying for 17th and 36th in his past two tournaments while shooting a career-low 72 in day one of the Williams Fall Invitational. The team finished just 9 strokes behind the first-place team in its last tournament, and will look to finish inside the top four this upcoming weekend.
