Trinity Men's Tennis Defeats Ithaca In Last Match Of The Year

Hartford, Conn. - The Trinity College Bantams closed out the 2018-19 season with a 6-3 victory over the visiting Ithaca College Bombers in men's tennis action that was played in the Trinity Field House and outside at Assaiante Center this afternoon.  Trinity finishes the year with a 3-11 record, while the Bombers close out the regular season at 5-12 and four consecutive losses.  Doubles was played indoors, while the singles session began outside but had to head back inside due to more rain.  

Sophomores Chris Bilicic (Chicago, Ill.) and Granville Kaynor (New Orleans, La.) gave an early 1-1 tie in doubles play with an 8-2 win at the bottom position.  Trinity pulled ahead with the final victory of the doubles session when senior co-captain Chris Caskin (Potomac, Md.) and first-year Dylan Powell (Warwick, Bermuda) scored a late break in an 8-6 triumph in the second slot.  Bilicic gave the Bantams a 3-1 lead with the only singles win in straight sets without tiebreakers of the match, 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 3 spot.  Bantam sophomore Ross DeRose came out on top with a 10-7 win in the super-tiebreaker after each player earned a 6-3 win in the first two sets at second singles. 

Trinity led, 4-1, but Ithaca's Minos Stavrakas responded to a tough 6-4 defeat in the opening set with a commanding 6-1 response in the second. The third-set super-breaker was an ferocious battle that went 22 total points with Stavrakas prevailing, 12-10, to take the match at first singles over Kaynor. Ithaca's Max Prestwich added another three-set triumph in his fourth-singles matchup against Powell. Caskin pulled out a phenomenal match to register the game-winning point in the team scoring, taking the final two points to take the tiebreaker, 8-6, before pulling away in the third-set super-tiebreaker, 10-1. Bantam rookie Charles Kilborn (Winnetka, Ill.) closed out the scoring with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 win at sixth singles.
