Hartford, Conn. – First-year RHP Hannah King (Kennebunk, Maine) tossed a three-hitter and a five-hitter, allowing just four earned runs over 14 innings of work, as the Trinity College Bantams split a season-ending doubleheader, 2/3-3-1 against the visiting Worcester State College Lancers in softball action this afternoon. Trinity finishes the 2013 season with a 16-18 record, while the Lancers close the regular season at 22-15.
Worcester State took a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning of the opener on a leadoff single by junior Carolyn Hassett (Charlton, Mass.), a sacrifice bunt, a passed ball, and a sacrifice fly by junior Hillary Hart Clinton, Mass.). Trinity senior tri-captain 1B Kerry McCarthy (Andover, Mass.) started the bottom of the sixth with a double, and was sacrificed to third, but Lancer senior co-captain 3B Alex Kerr (Franklin, Mass.) cut her off at the plate on a ground ball by Bantam DP Olivia Berry (Quincy, Mass.). Bantam senior tri-captain SS Caroline Blanchard (Norwich, Conn.) and junior C Abby Ostrom (Carlisle, Mass.) singled in the bottom of the seventh frame, but Worcester State senior pitcher Hannah Everson (Methuen, Mass.) got the last out on a fly ball to left field to earn a complete game and her eighth victory of the year (8-5).
The Bantams had scored once in the first inning on a walk by first-year Elizabeth McQuaid (Lowell, Mass.), a passed ball, a single by Ostrom, and a sacrifice fly by freshman 3B Erica Correa (Glen Rock, N.J.), but the Lancers scored twice in the top of the fourth on singles by Hess and Everson sandwiched around a two-base error in the Trinity infield. The Bantams added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a single by McQuaid and an RBI double by Ostrom. Ostrom finished 3-for-4 , while McCarthy and McQuaid were both 2-for-3 for the Bantam offense. Evers allowed eight hits and two unearned runs with a walk and three strikeouts, while King walked two and fanned six.
Trinity scored in each of the first three innings of the second game on a double by Blanchard and an RBI single by Ostrom in the first and solo homers by junior CF Christina Galese (Fairfield, N.J.) and McQuaid in the second and third innings, respectively. The Lancers scored their lone run of the game on a single by rookie Sara Pelletier (Leominster, Mass.), an outfield error on the play to allow her an extra base on the play, and a two-out, run-scoring single by Hassett. King yielded five hits and struck out three without a walk and did not allow a baserunner past second base after the fourth inning to finish the season at 14-10. Freshman RHP Meghan Rich (Chelmsford, Mass.) took the hard-luck loss in the circle for Worcester State, allowing six hits and walking two with one K. Hassett and Pelletier were the only players with two hits in the nightcap.
