Late Runs Give Coast Guard Softball Consecutive Wins over Trinity

Hartford, Conn. –  First-year Morgan Kingston (Satellite Beach, Fla.) delivered in the clutch to lead the Coast Guard Academy Bears over the Trinity College Bantams, 9/6-3/3 in a softball doubleheader this evening on Campus Field.  Trinity drops to 7-5 with the pair of losses, while Coast Guard jumps to 9-5 on the year.

Trailing by a run heading into the seventh inning, Kingston doubled to start things off for the Bears, before coming around to score the game-tying run the opening game.  Trinity was unable to answer in the bottom half of the inning, and with the score tied at 3-3, the game went to extra innings.

Coast Guard exploded for six runs to start the extra frames.  The Bears led the eighth with a two-run double by senior co-captain Stacia Sarwinski (Grove, Ok.).  Kingston singled the bases full and Coast Guard went on to score four additional runs in the inning, putting the game out of reach for the Bantams.

Coast Guard rode the momentum into the second game, jumping out to a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Sarwinski in the second inning.   The Bears tacked on another run in the fifth, before Trinity took a 3-2 lead with a deep three-run centerfield homerun by sophomore Miranda Riendeau-Card (Bowdoinham, Me.) in the bottom of the sixth.  Down to their final two outs, Kingston came up with yet another big hit, doubling in a run to tie the game at 3-3.  Back-to-back run scoring singles by senior Holli Bastinck (Wayne, N.J.) and rookie Hannah Ingerson (Kirkwood, Pa.) gave the Bears a 6-3 lead with the day losing light.

Trinity junior Christina Galese (Fairfield, N.J.) singled to start the bottom of the seventh, but Coast Guard rookie starter Sammy Yuknat (Old Lyme, Conn.) induced a double play and a groundout to cap the win for the Bears.  Trinity's last win over Coast Guard came on April 6, 2010, with the Bears having won the next three contests, including today.

Sophmore Erin Lisko (Waynesboro, Pa.) finished the day with five hits, while Kingston collected four hits on the afternoon to lead the Coast Guard offense.  Riendeau-Card finished the day with three hits and four RBI to lead the Trinity offense.  First-year pitchers Kristine Kahl (Monmouth, Me.) and Yuknat each earned wins on the mound in complete games for the Bears.
