Springfield, Mass. - The Western New England University Golden
Bear softball squad swept the visiting Trinity College Bantams,
9-1, in five innings and, 8-5, in the nightcap this afternoon at
Golden Bear Park. Trinity falls to 8-9, while the Golden
Bears have won four straight to improve to 12-7 overall.
Junior Maria Francese went 5-for-7 on the afternoon and senior co-captain Jeana Longo, sophomore catcher Grace Kucharski both smacked home runs in the opener. Western New England scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning to set the tone early. Longo, who had two hits, capped the scoring with a two-run blast for her first career homer at any level of competitive softball. Senior tri-captain SS Caroline Blanchard (Norwich, Conn.) had an RBI-single, senior tri-captain 1B Kerry McCarthy (Andover, Mass.) hit a double and senior OF Amelia Mostovoy (San Francisco, Calif.) had a single to lead Trinity. Sophomore Lauren Zambrano struck out five batters and gave up only three hits without issuing a walk in a complete-game victory, her ninth in 11 decisions.
Blanchard staked Trinity to a 1-0 lead in game two after a home run in the top of the first, but the Bantams' only lead of the day was short-lived as the Golden Bears immediately responded with four runs in the home half of the inning. Trailing 6-1 in the fifth, Trinity made things interesting when junior Abigail Ostrom (CVarlisle, Mass.) had a RBI-single and McCarthy slammed a three-run blast to pull the Bantams to within one at 6-5. In the sixth, Francese and Longo provided RBIs on a triple and a groundout, respectively, to give the Golden Bears some insurance runs, but Blanchard singled and Ostrom reached on an error in the top of the seventh to put the tying run at the plate. The runners advanced on a fly ball to right field by first-year Erica Correa (Glen Rock, N.J.), but McCarthy went down on strikes for the game's final out.
