Hartford, Conn. – First-year SS Courtney Erickson (Everett, Mass.) went 5-for-6 with a run, a walk, and a stolen base and sophomores Cassia Armstrong (Vancouver, British Columbia) and Rachael Smith (Winchester, Mass.) won a game apiece in the circle to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a home-opening 1/3-0/2 doubleheader sweep against the visiting Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors in softball action this afternoon. Trinity improves to 9-5, ends a three-game losing streak overall, and snaps a 15-game losing streak against the Warriors dating back to 2008, while the Warriors drop to 3-11.
Armstrong fired a three-hit shutout with three walks and three strikeouts in the opener, and did not allow a Warrior past second base after the first inning to improve to 4-2 and extend her streak of innings pitched without allowing an earned run to 24 in a row. Trinity left the Warriors on the field when first-year C Nicole Towner (Erie, Colo.) and sophomore RF Erica Merullo (Lynnfield, Mass.) found themselves in scoring position thanks to a pair of two-out fielding errors by the Warriors. Smith delivered the clinching hit just past Eastern Connecticut 2B Danielle Robillard (Swansea, Mass.) for the game’s only run. Junior southpaw Summer Cipriani (Stonington, Conn.) took the loss for the Warriors, yielding zero earned runs, nine hits and three walks and failing to strike out a batter.
In the second game, Trinity broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning when senior 2B Elizabeth McQuaid (Lowell, Mass.) led off with a double, advanced to third base on a ground ball, and scored when Eastern Connecticut sophomore righty Haeli Campbell (Goffstown, N.H.) threw a wild pitch on the first pitch of an intentional walk with Erickson at the plate. Warrior junior CF Samantha Bardos (Norwalk, Conn.) started the top of the seventh with a double to center field and Robillard followed with a single to right field. Smith retired junior Gina Georgetti (Milford, Conn.) by snagging a liner up the middle and Cipriani stepped on home plate trying to squeeze tying run home for the second out of the inning, before Smith got the last out of the day on a fly ball.
Trinity had scored an unearned run in the first inning of the nightcap on a double by sophomore 3B Michelle Treglia (Fairfield, Conn.) and a two-base error in the Eastern Connecticut outfield off a hard-hit ball by Erickson, after Merullo gunned down a Warrior runner at the plate from right field for the third out in the top of the first. The Bantams took a 2-0 lead after three innings when Erickson led off with a base hit and scored on three walks. The Warriors scored an unearned run without getting a hit in the fourth frame and tied the game at 2-2 on an RBI single by Cipriani. McQuaid finished 2-for-4 in the second game and was 3-for-6 with two doubles in the twinbill, while Erickson reached base in seven of her eight plate appearances with a successful sacrifice bunt accounting for the only time she failed to get on. Smith improved to 4-3 with a six-hitter, allowing one earned run, walking six, and fanning six. Campbell took the loss in relief, while Cipriani and Robillard had two hits each for Eastern Connecticut.
