Hartford, Conn. – Senior co-captain Erica Quinones (Trumbull, Conn.) went 3-for-3 with two doubles, three runs, and a two-run homer that ended the game after six innings due to the eight-run mercy rule to lead the Trinity College Bantams to 9-1 victory over the visiting Bates College Bobcats in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East Division softball opener for both teams this afternoon. Trinity improves to 10-5 with its third win in a row, while the Bobcats fall to 0-13.
In the second game of today's twinbill, Trinity holds a 13-3 lead with two outs in the top of the fifth inning but the game was suspended when the skies open and a treacherous mix of rain and ice pelted the field. Today's doubleheader was delayed an hour due to rain last night and this morning, and tomorrow's game between the squads was postponed to Sunday, April 10 due to expected snow tonight in Connecticut. The teams will complete the suspended game prior to next Sunday's rescheduled contest.
Trinity scored five times in the first inning, benefitting from five walks, two wild pitches, a passed ball, and dropped fly ball. Sophomore RHP Cassia Armstrong (Vancouver, British Columbia) helped her own cause with a two-out RBI double in the inning. Trinity added two more runs in the second inning when Quinones doubled and scored on a single by first-year C Nicole Towner (Erie, Colo.) and rookie SS Courtney Erickson (Everett, Mass.) singled and scored on a double steal.
Bates scored its run in the fifth inning on a double by Emma Schille (Natick, Mass.) who stole third base and scored on a error in the outfield. The Bobcats threatened again in the sixth frame, loading the bases on a lead-off single by Paige Ahlholm (North Andover, Mass.), a double by Tori Fitzgerald (Holliston, Mass.), and a walk, but Armstrong got the third out on a fly ball by Schille. Trinity sophomore 3B Michelle Treglia (Fairfield, Conn.) walked to start the bottom of the sixth inning, and Quinones closed the door with a bomb over the left field fence. Armstrong improved to 5-2 in the circle, allowing six hits and walking three with two strikeouts while extending her streak of innings pitched without allowing an earned run to 40 in a row.
Bates took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the second game on an RBI double by Schille, a run-scoring single by rookie Madison Fox (Denver, Colo.), and a passed ball. Towner delivered an RBI single for Trinity in the bottom of the first inning, and the home team erupted for six runs in the second frame. Erickson belted a two-run single to highlight the inning and added another in the next frame to give Trinity a 9-3 lead after three frames. Bantam senior 2B Elizabeth McQuaid (Lowell, Mass.) added an RBI double and Quinones cleared the loaded bases with a three-run double in the fourth inning, and Trinity sophomore righty Rachael Smith (Winchester, Mass.) recorded one out in the top of the fifth before the game was halted. Quinones finished the day with three doubles and a homer in four at-bats, four runs, six RBI, and three walks.
