Mansfield, Conn. - Junior RHP Rachael Smith (Winchester, Mass.) tossed a four-hitter with 10 K's in the first game and first-year southpaw Lindsay Golia (North Branford, Conn.) had a five-hit shutout in game two to lead the visiting Trinity College Bantams to 7/9-2/0 softball doubleheader sweep against the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors at Eastern Softball Stadium this afternoon.  The Bantams snap a three-game losing streak with their second twinbill sweep of the Warriors in as many years, while Eastern Connecticut falls to 2-10.

Trinity trailed in game one, 2-0, after two innings thanks to an RBI double in the first inning by Warrior senior Gina Georgetti (Milford, Conn.) and a run-scoring single by Kelsey Mosher in the second frame.  The Bantams had runners in scoring position in each of the first two innings, but Warrior senior starter Samantha Valentine (Ridge, N.Y.) pitched out of trouble in the first and Trinity junior captain 2B Michelle Treglia (Fairfield, Conn.) grounded hard to second base for an inning-ending double play in the second.

Bantam junior Erica Merulla (Lynnfield, Mass.) tripled down the right field line to open the third inning and was driven home on a line drive up the middle by Treglia to cut the Warrior lead in half.  Two innings later, Trinity took a 4-2 lead on a leadoff double by Treglia, an RBI single by sophomore Courtney Erickson (Everett, Mass.), and a two-run homer by first-year 1B Natalie Bruno (Stratham, N.H.).

Smith, who had struck out the side in the bottom of the fourth frame, cruised through the next two innings, allowing just one hit and fanning three more Warriors, and the Bantams tacked on three more runs on a two-run double by sophomore C Nicole Towner (Erie, Colo.) in the sixth and an RBI single by junior Katie Haghdan (Pelham, N.H.) in the seventh inning.  Eastern Connecticut got runners on first and second with a hit batsman and a walk, but completed the inning with no damage.

Trinity pounded 12 hits, including seven in three innings off losing pitcher Morgan Sanson (Thomaston, Conn.), and took advantage of two Eastern Connecticut errors while committing one in the opener.  Smith improved to 3-2 and Sanson dropped to 0-2.  Bruno finished 2-for-4 at the plate, while Towner and Treglia were both 2-for-3 with a walk offensively for the Bantams.  Georgetti had two hits for the Warriors.

Erickson had an RBI single in the first inning of game two and belted a solo homer in the third frame, while Eastern Connecticut had runners on base in each of the first three innings but failed to score.  Trinity rookie OF Nikki Anderson (Dunbarton, N.H.) led off the fourth with a bunt single, and four walks, a passed ball, and a fielding error put the Bantams ahead, 5-0, with the bases loaded and two outs. Senior captain Victoria Baez (Tuckahoe, N.Y.) broke the game open with a monster shot over the deepest part of the park in center field to break the game open, and the Bantams went on to win, 9-0, after five innings due to the mercy rule.  Erickson finished 2-for-2 with two runs and three RBI and Golia improved to 5-2.  Mosher had two hits for the Warriors and freshman LHP Jacky Arndt (Chelmsford, Mass.) took the loss despite striking out six in 3.1 innings of work in the circle.
