Hartford, Conn. – Junior SS Courtney Erickson (Everett, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with three RBIs at the plate, drove in the game-tying run, and scored the go-ahead run on a double steal to lead the Trinity College Bantams to an 11-7 victory over the visiting Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors in softball action this afternoon.  Trinity came back from a 4-0 deficit early to improve to 8-5 and snap a three-game losing skid.  Eastern Connecticut falls to 3-10.  The second game of the scheduled doubleheader did not begin until close to 6 p.m. and was called due to darkness with the game tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Trinity had a runner on first base and two outs with Erickson up to bat when the game was called off.

Trinity used a five-run, fifth inning to take a 5-4 lead and maintained its advantage the rest of the way in a game that saw the teams combine for 25 hits, six errors, and 19 runners left on base.  Bantam first-year OF Jenna Thomas (Orange, Conn.) started the fifth with a leadoff double, went to third on a single by fellow rookie Kaitlyn DeCapua (Milford, Mass.), and scored the first Trinity run when she beat the throw home from Warrior pitcher Morgan Sanson (Thomaston, Conn.) on a squeeze bunt by senior captain Meaghan Race (Grand Rapids, Mich.).  DeCapua scored on an infield single by senior Erica Merullo (Lynnfield, Mass.) and a throwing error, and Race made it 4-3 when she scored on a passed ball.  Erickson drove home Merullo with a single and later scored the game-winning run when rookie Samantha Witmer (Drexel Hill, Pa.) got caught in a rundown on am attempted steal of second base and Erickson crossed the plate before the Warriors could tag Witmer out.

Trinity tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth frame on an RBI single by Race and a two-out, two-run base knock by Erickson to make the score, 8-4.  Warrior freshman Morgan Bolduk (Vernon, Conn.) had an RBI single in the top of the fifth, but Thomas answered in the bottom of the inning with a sacrifice fly.  Sophomore SS Sara Pisanelli (Wallingford, Conn.) led off with a double and scored on a single by Sanson in the sixth inning, but the Bantams scored twice in the bottom half on an RBI single by Witmer and an Eastern Connecticut error.  Freshman Alexis Tyrell (Torrington, Conn.) added a run-scoring single for the Warriors to make it, 11-7, in the top of the seventh inning, but Trinity senior captain Rachael Smith (Winchester, Mass.) struck out the last two batters of the game to preserve the win for sophomore starter Lindsay Pressman (Huntington, N.Y.).

DeCapua, Erickson, Merullo, Race, and Witmer each had two hits for Trinity. Race also scored twice and drove in two runs, and Thomas scored twice, stole a base, and drove in a run.  Bolduc, Sanson, Tyrell, and sophomore Sabrina LaMere (North Branford, Conn.) had two hits apiece for Eastern Connecticut, while freshman Kamdynn Moroney (Sandy Hook, Conn.) drove home two of the Warriors’ three runs in the third inning with a two-out single.  Tyrrell had three of Eastern Connecticut’s eight stolen bases.  Pressman allowed six runs and 10 hits with three strikeouts in six innings to improve to 2-1, while Sanson falls to 1-4.
