Trinity Softball Drops Pair In Spring Games Action Down South

Clermont, Fla. - The Trinity College Bantams dropped a pair of Spring Games softball decisions this afternoon, 10-9, in 10 innings against the Manchester University Spartans and, 9-1, in six innings versus the University of Southern Maine Huskies.  The Bantams fall to 3-3 and will play Western New England and Endicott on Thursday, March 21 at 1:30 p.m. and 3:45 p.m., respectively.  Trinity sophomore Hannah Zukowski (Burlington, Conn.) had two hits against the Spartans and senior tri-captain Courtney Erickson (Everett, Mass.) had two hits and scored the Bantam run on a double steal against the Huskies.  The extra innings against Manchester were played with a runner given second base prior to each team's turn at bat.

The Manchester game was a thriller that saw the Spartans take a 6-5 lead in the top of the seventh inning only to have Trinity force the extra innings with a run in the bottom of the seventh.  Both teams scored one in the eighth frame, while Manchester tacked on three in the ninth including two on a two-run double by sophomore Alexis Mokos, and Trinity scored twice in the bottom of the ninth on a two-out, two-run homer by sophomore Jenna Thomas (Orange, Calif.) to pull within one before making the last out.

Trinity had broken a scoreless tie with three runs in the fifth inning on RBI doubles by sophomores Cassidy Schiff (Darien, Conn.) and Samantha Witmer (Drexel Hill, Pa.) and a double steal.  The Bantams added another run in the fourth frame on a two-out, run-scoring single by Schiff, but allowed three Spartan runs in the top of the fifth.  The Bantams went ahead, 5-3, after five innings thanks to a Manchester error and a two-out RBI single by Zukowski.

Manchester scored its fourth run in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly, and junior Makenzi Nyland belted a two-run triple in the top of the seventh to give the Spartans their first lead. Witmer led off the bottom of the seventh by getting hit with a pitch and scored the game-tying run on a two-out triple by senior tri-captain C Nicole Towner (Erie, Colo.).  Another Manchester sacrifice fly and an RBI groundout by Trinity sophomore Gillian Birk (Westport, Conn.) made it 8-all after eight innings, but the Spartans took a 9-6 lead on a two-out, three-run double by Nyland off Bantam junior RHP Madeline Spencer-Orrell (Northampton, Mass).  Thomas homer made the score, 9-8, but Manchester's Haley Perez recorded the final out on a pop-up.

Trailing Southern Maine, 1-0, after three innings, Trinity tied the game in the top of the fourth when Erickson led off with a single and scored from third on the successful double steal with two outs.  The Huskies scored twice each in the fourth and fifth innings and ended the game early due to an eight-run mercy rule with four more in the sixth.  Trinity junior tri-captain RHP Lindsay Pressman (Huntington, N.Y.) took the loss in the circle.
