Trinity Softball Closes Spring Trip With Wins Over Wellesley And Elmhurst

Clermont, Fla. - Sophomore Hannah Zukowski (Burlington, Conn.) and first-year Alex Chambers (East Lyme, Conn.) combined to go 9-for-9 in the first game and rookie RHP Jordan Stephan (South Orange, N.J.) improved to 4-0 with  a complete-game effort in the second game, as the Trinity College Bantams doubled up the Wellesley College Blue and then upended the Elmhurst College Bluejays on their last day in the Spring Games softball tournament this afternoon.  Trinity improves to 7-3 and ends its spring-break trip with four wins in a row.  The Bantams are off until a three-game series at home against Bowdoin to open New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play next weekend.  Bantam senior tri-captain Courtney Erickson (Everett, Mass.) had three RBIs to tie for the Trinity all-time record with 103 in her career.

Trinity never trailed against Wellesley, scoring twice in the top of the first two innings to build a 4-0 lead.  Bantam senior tri-captain SS Courtney Erickson (Everett, Mass.) knocked in the first run with a two-out single and scored on a double by Zukowski in the first frame.  Trinity scored in the second inning on an RBI double by sophomore 3B Cassidy Schiff (Darien, Conn.) and a triple by sophomore Samantha Witmer (Drexel Hill, Pa.) that scored Schiff.  The Blue cut their deficit in half with two runs in the third inning, but Trinity got both runs back on a wild pitch and an RBI single by Chambers.  A two-run single by Zukowski and a two-out, run-scoring hit by first-year 2B Maura Keary (Fairfield, Conn.) put Trinity ahead, 9-3, after the top of the sixth frame, but Wellesley matched them with three runs in the bottom of the sixth including two unearned runs.

Trinity opened up an insurmountable 16-3 advantage with a seven-run seventh inning thanks to six doubles by Bantam batters.  Wellesley scored three in the bottom of the seventh, but Stephan entered the game with one out and retired the last two batters with the last on a strikeout.  Trinity junior RHP Madeline Spencer-Orrell (Northampton, Mass.) tossed 3.2 innings of relief to improve to 2-1 in the circle.  Zukowski finished 5-for-5 with a double, three runs, and three RBIs, while Chambers doubled twice with two runs and three RBIs.  Schiff and Witmer both had three hits with two doubles and two RBIs, while Witmer also tripled, and Erickson, Keary, and sophomore Jenna Thomas (Orange, Conn.) added two hits apiece.

Against Elmhurst, Stephan scattered nine hits and allowed three earned runs with five strikeouts and zero walks. Elmhurst led, 1-0, on a sacrifice fly by Mia Riese, but Trinity tied it in the bottom of the second when senior tri-captain C Nicole Towner (Erie, Colo.) walked and scored on a double steal.  The Bantams broke the game open by scoring five runs with two already out in the third inning.  Keary started the rally with a single, followed by a Witmer single, back-to-back doubles by Thomas and Erickson, and a two-run jack to center field by Towner.  The game remained 6-1 until Alexis Ramos delivered an RBI single for the Bluejays in the sixth inning.  In their last turn at bat, Riese and Veronica Zahn doubled and Zahn scored on a Trinity error to make it, 6-4.  Another Bluejay reached base on an error before Stephan recorded the final out on a pop-up. Erickson and Thomas were both 2-for-3 for the Trinity offense.
