Northfield, Vt. - The Trinity College women's hockey team fell to the No. 4-ranked Norwich University Cadets, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference battle at Kreitzburg Arena. The Bantams fall to 7-7-1 on the year while Norwich improves to 14-3-1 with its second win in a row. Trinity returns to action on Wednesday for a home non-conference matchup versus Plymouth State at 7:30 p.m. The Bantams and Panthers squared off earlier this season which resulted in a 4-2 Trinity victory on the road.
After falling behind 1-0 just 3:05 into the game, Norwich scored three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead. Trinity scored again before the opening period was done though to complete a wild five-goal first 20 minutes.
Bantam rookie Ellie Fellows (Westport, Mass.) gave the Bantams a 1-0 lead with a one-timer goal from the top of the crease off a pass from classmate Angelica Mushenko (East Longmeadow, Mass.) at the side of the goal. Fellows crashed the net and lifted the puck over the blocker of Norwich goalie Emily Lambert (Riverview, Mich.). Sophomore Julia Lee (Ferguson's Cove, Nova Scotia) also had an assist on the goal.
Norwich came up with the equalizer at the 7:58 mark of the first period with Liesel Baker (Saline, Mich.) scoring her first goal of the season and second of her career, capitalizing on a rebound chance after KC Herne's (Akwesasne, N.Y.) shot was saved. Samantha Benoit (Bow, N.H.) had the secondary assist on the goal.
Amanda Conway (Methuen, Mass) gave Norwich its first lead of the game on the power play off assists from Sophie McGovern (Hermantown, Minn.) and Kirsten Watts (Chugiak, Alaska). McGovern took a pass from Watts and skated down the left wing with speed to get around a Trinity defender before cutting hard towards the net as she crossed below the faceoff circle and shoveled a pass over to Conway who slammed it home on the far side for the goal.
Adrieana Rossini (Malden, Mass.) increased the lead to 3-1 at the 14:02 mark of the first period with her seventh goal of the season off assists from Jess Piracini (Arlington, Mass.) and Alyssa Hulst (Scarborough, Maine). Trinity capped the first period scoring with Mushenko scoring on a 2-on-0 odd-player rush off an assist from fellow rookie Caelin Flaherty (Upton, Mass.). Flaherty intercepted a Norwich blue-line pass and was off to the races with Mushenko before the Cadet defense could recover to set up the rush. Flaherty skated in on the right and then fed a pass over to Mushenko who buried it into the net despite Lambert's best efforts to slide over.
McGovern capped the scoring for the day with her ninth goal of the season at the 8:21 mark of the second period off assists from Rossini and Robyn Foley (Goulds, Newfoundland and Labrador). Trinity earned a power play opportunity in the final frame, however was unable to muster a comeback.
