Providence, R.I. - Junior captain Grant Sorensen (Moore, Okla.) finished second in the 149-pound bracket while classmate Jack Reilly (Andover, Mass.) finished fourth at 157 to lead the Trinity College wrestling squad at the Johnson & Wales USC Wildcat Open on Sunday in Providence, R.I. The Bantams return to the mat on Saturday of next weekend when they travel to Western New England for a tri-match against the Golden Bears and Southern Maine.
Sorensen worked a pin in his first match of the day before a 13-0 major decision and 7-5 victory pitted him against Charles Banaszak of Brown in the championship match. Sorensen ultimately fell to Banaszak, a former Division III All-American at the University of Chicago before transferring to Brown, to finish second among all wrestlers in the 149-pound class. His semifinals victory came over Evan Drill of NYU, who is currently ranked No. 6 in the nation by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) and No. 10 by D3Wrestle.
Reilly similarly had a successful day, picking up one pin on his way to a fourth-place finish at 157-pounds. Sophomore Lukas Kaminski (Hopkinton, Mass.) finished the day with a pair of falls at 165-pounds while junior Mason Sangillo (Florham Park, N.J.) capped off a stellar weekend with a pin and four wins via decision en route to a sixth-place finish at 285. Sangillo went 7-1 on the weekend and didn't wrestle in the fifth-place match today due to a six match limit.
