Hartford, Conn. - First-year forward Whitney Hoban (Winnetka, Ill.) scored the game's first goal and assisted junior forward Katie Marlow-Benedick (Weston, Mass.) on the second to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 2-0 victory over the visiting Worcester Polytechnic Institute Engineers in women's soccer action this afternoon.  Trinity, playing in its home opener, improves to 1-3, while the Engineers drop to 5-2 with their second loss in as many days.  Trinity improves to 2-0-1 against the Engineers all-time and over the last three seasons.

The first half ended scoreless despite eight Bantam shots and several near misses by the home team in the final minutes.  Hoban missed just wide once, had a second shot stopped on a great save by Engineer senior Gabriela Hoops (Stonington, Conn.), and it the cross bar on a third all in the last 15 minutes before the break. Trinity sophomore midfielder Cami Beath (Kennebunk, Maine) had a shot sail just high from close on the right wing in the 33rd minute, and Hoops denied Bantam rookie Brenna Hoar (Ludlow, Mass.) with a diving save in the 40th minute.

Hoban gave Trinity a 1-0 lead in the 54th minute, shooting low and to Hoops' right after junior midfielder Olga Koszykowska (New Britain, Conn.) had send the ball over the WPI defense.  The Engineers had two close chances at a tie in the final five minutes, as senior back Juliana Cabello (Smithtown, N.Y.) had a shot from straight-on inside the box blocked by the Trinity defense in the 86th minute, and Bantam sophomore goalie Taylor O'Connor (Danvers, Mass.) made a stellar save against junior midfielder Kristen McCrea (Weymouth, Mass.) in the 88th minute of play.  Marlow-Benedick made a nice move on the last WPI defender and beat Hoops with an insurance goal with 35 seconds on the clock.

Hoops finished with nine saves and O'Connor had seven to earn a shutout, while junior Rhone O'Hara (Woodstock, Conn.) and sophomore Amelia Kroschwitz (Byfield, Mass.) joined Hoban and Koszykowska with Trinity assists.  Trinity outshot the Engineers, 18-9, and doubled them up, 2-1, on corner kicks.  The Bantams host Emerson on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. while WPI visits Wentworth the same night at 7 p.m.
