Trinity's Raj Wins Third Holleran Title At CSA National Women's Squash Singles Championships

Philadelphia, Pa. - Trinity College senior tri-captain Vanessa Raj (Penang, Malaysia) won the College Squash Association (CSA) National Singles Championship Holleran North "B" Tournament with a dramatic, 3-2 victory over No. 2-seeded Cassandra Ong, of Stanford in the finals this afternoon at the University of Pennsylvania.  Raj won the first two games, 11-7, and, 11-3, but Ong won the next two, 11-6, and, 11-9.  Raj took her third Holleran title in as many years with an 11-6 triumph in the fifth game.  Also today, Trinity sophomore Sarahi Lopez (Zappopan, Mexico) won the Ramsay "A" bracket consolation crown with a 3-1 win over Pennsylvania's Jessica Davis, while Bantam first-year Nana Carleke (Karlskrona, Sweden) lost, 3-0, against Columbia's Ellie MacVeigh in the Holleran West "B" bracket consolation finals

Yesterday, Raj had beaten Harvard's Madeleine Chai, 3-1, in the semifinals.  They split the first two games with each earning an 11-8 win, but Raj took control with an 11-4 win in the third game and won it with an 11-7 triumph in the fourth game.  Seeded No. 1 in the 16-player tournament, Raj had swept Franklin and Marshall's Emily Knapp, 11-3, 11-2, 11-3 in the first round and took care of Navmi Sharma, from the host Penn Quakers, 11-5, 12-10, 11-9, in the quarterfinals on Friday.  Also Saturday, Lopez (won, 3-1, against Stanford's Elena Wagenmans in her semifinal match and Carleke won, 3-1, against William Smith's Gabrielle Fraser in a semifinal.

On Friday, Lopez and junior teammate Akanksha Salukhe (Vasco de Gama, India) were ousted in the first round of the Ramsay "A" bracket.  Salunkhe lost to top-ranked Georgina Kennedy, of Harvard, 11-7, 11-4, 11-6, and Lopez fell against George Washington's Zoe Foo Yuk Han in five games.  Lopez lost the first and third games, 11-7, and, 11-6, respectively, and won the second, 11-4, and the fourth, 11-7.  In the deciding fifth game, Lopez was beaten by a count of 11-7.  Carleke also lost in the Holleran West "B" bracket", dropping an 11-6, 11-2, 11-5 decision against Harvard's Hannah Craig in the opening round.  Lopez and Carleke won first-round consolations later on Friday to reach Saturday's rounds, but Salunkhe lost her first consolation match as well.
