Women’s Swimming & Diving Splits with Mount Holyoke, Vassar

Hartford, Conn. – The Trinity College women’s swimming & diving program competed against Vassar and Mount Holyoke Tuesday afternoon, upending Mount Holyoke 208-90 and falling narrowly to host school Vassar 154-137. Despite falling by less than 20 points to Vassar, the Bantams saw everyone who competed swim their best times of the season, showcasing a consistent improvement each meet.

There was at least one Trinity swimmer inside the top three in nearly every event, with a handful of first-place finishes. Sophomore Aurelia Umholtz (Flagstaff, Ariz.) swam a personal-best time of 5:22.56 in the 500-yard freestyle to capture first, while first-year Rachel Papalski (Flemington, N.J.) placed first after touching the matt with a time of 55.89 in the 100-yard freestyle. Additionally, the relay team of Papalski, Umholtz, sophomore Olivia Fournier (Southington, Conn.) and classmate Emily Murphy (Gansevoort, N.Y.) took first in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Sophomore Zoryanna Matlashewski (Anoka, Minn.) and Papalski went second and third in the 1,000-yard freestyle to start the individual events before Murphy took third in the 200-yard freestyle. Senior Madi Guay (Wakefield, Mass.) and junior Ellie Tate (Carisle, Pa.) placed second and third in the 100-yard breaststroke, and Umholtz saw a second-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly. A second-place finish by Fournier in the 50-yard freestyle set up the one-meter diving, where junior Lia Urban-Spillane (Rochester, N.Y.) placed third with a score of 213.75. After Murphy and sophomore Ruby Schiller (Cambridge, Mass.) took second and third in the 100-yard butterfly, Matlashewski placed second in the 200-yard IM.

Alongside Umholtz were two other Bantams who broke personal-best times Tuesday evening; sophomore Emily Capprini (Norton, Mass.) finished with a time of 5:44.59 in the 500-yard freestyle, and first-year Aprille Gangi (North Easton, Mass.) who finished with a time of 2:50.95.

The Bantams are back on the road Saturday, heading to Clark University for a dual meet; meet time is slated for 1 p.m.
