Northampton, Mass. - The Trinity College volleyball team knocked off the Emmanuel College Saints, 3-0, on Friday night on the first day of the Hall of Fame Volleyball Invitational Tournament, hosted by Smith College and Amherst College. The win moves Trinity to 9-10 overall while Emmanuel falls to 10-18 on the season.
The Bantams were paced with four players who tallied eight kills each as senior tri-captain Rachel Hughes (Boxborough, Mass.), junior Claudia Varner (Port Washington, N.Y.), and first-years Wyllie Boughton (Andover, Mass.) and Colette Scheffers (Flossmoor, Ill.) combined for 32 of the team's 35 kills. Boughton also added 13 digs for Trinity, as did junior Rachel Underwood (Danville, Calif.) who also served up two aces. Senior tri-captain Shelby Deck (Newport Beach, Calif.) led the squad with four aces on the evening while fellow senior tri-captain Randi Whitham (Weymouth, Mass.) paced the team with 27 assists as well as two aces of her own.
Trinity returns to action tomorrow when they face off against UMass-Boston at 10 a.m. followed by SUNY-Canton at 1 p.m. Both games will be played in Alumni Gym at Amherst College.
