Hartford, Conn. – The Trinity College women’s volleyball program earned its second straight-set victory this week, taking down Worcester State on the road Friday night, 3-0. Sophomore Ally Conde (Killingly, Conn.) and senior Colette Scheffers (Floosmoor, Ill.) combined for 18 kills, helping the Bantams to its third straight non-conference victory.
The sweep didn’t come easy, as the Lancers applied pressure in all three sets, forcing Trinity past 25 points in the opening two frames. Scoring went back and forth through the opening set, with the Trinity holding the edge through the opening 18 points. After a Lancer lead late in the set, The Bantams utilized a handful of hitting errors before senior Wyllie Boughton (Andover, Mass.) and junior Brianna Brown (Telluride, Colo.) picked up a pair of kills. The hosts tied the set once more at 24 all, but two more hitting errors gave the Bantams a 1-0 lead.
The second set saw the same competitiveness, as neither team led by more than four points. After a Trinity service error that gave Worcester State a 24-23 lead, the Bantams dug in, seeing kills from Scheffers and Conde to take the second set. After a close opening to the third set, the Bantams ran away with set number three, taking it by a 25-17 final.
Scheffers and Conde led the way for the Bantams, and saw a fantastic performance from sophomore Alexandra Kelly (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), who hit .429 and contributed six kills. Junior Jessica Yang (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) led the way with 25 assists, and added 16 kills.
The Bantams are back at home for two non-conference matchups, taking on Kean University at 11 a.m. before wrapping up the tri-match against UMass Boston at 3 p.m.
