Hartford, Conn. – After winning in straight sets to kick off day two of the Trinity Invitational, the Bantam volleyball program followed up its first performance with another sweep, going 2-0 on the day and 2-1 in the tournament with wins over Clark and Westfield State. Saturday’s performance brought the team back to .500, after dropping its first two competitions of the season.
After falling in five sets to Eastern Connecticut State on Friday night, the Bantams turned its game around in game two. The team hit .275 in its opening match, taking down Clark 3-0.
Six of the 25 points in set one came from senior Colette Scheffers (Flossmoor, Ill.), who helped the hosts win a back-and-forth first frame. Scheffers went on to finish the first game with 14 kills, hitting a team-high .310 to start the day.
The Bantams cruised through the following sets, winning 25-15 in each frame. The team saw 14 total blocks to Clark’s two, including four from freshman Molly Bernstein (Oakland, Calif.) and sophomore Ally Conde (Danielson, Conn.), and three from sophomore Alex Kelly (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and senior Wyllie Boughton (Andover, Mass.). Junior Ali Odermann had a game-high 14 digs for the second straight outing to round out a stellar game one.
In game two, it took 27 points for the Bantams to win the first set. Scheffers once again kept the hosts ahead in the first set, tallying five kills through the opening frame. Junior Jessica Yang (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) added in three service aces, helping gain momentum into the second set.
The second and third sets both saw 25-19 scores, but the final set of the day saw Trinity trail until the final five points. Tied 19 all, the hosts capitalized on four attack errors, a service ace from sophomore Natalia Ortiz (Bayamon, Puerto Rico), Scheffers ended it with a kill.
Scheffers finished with 26 kills on the afternoon through six sets. Bernstein earned a team-high seven blocks, adding in three more in game two.
Trinity returns to Oosting Gymnasium on Wednesday, September 11, to take on Western Connecticut State. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
