Hartford, Conn. – Junior S Jessica Yang (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) notched 34 assists, five aces, and six digs to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 3-1 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in volleyball action this afternoon at Oosting Gymnasium.  Trinity, which also lost a 3-1 decision to the Simmons University Sharks today, is now 4-3.  The Huskies also fell, 3-0, against the Sharks in the middle contest of today’s tri-match to finish the day at 3-6.  Simmons improves to 6-2 with its two wins today.  The Bantams open New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play at Williams on Friday at 7 p.m. in their next match.

Trinity used a 6-0 run early in the first set against the Huskies to turn a 2-2 tie into an 8-2 lead.  Southern Maine fought back and led, 24-23, but made two later errors and Trinity sophomore MH Ally Conde (Danielson, Conn.) had a late kill to give Trinity the set at 26-24.  The Bantams dominated the second set, 25-9, but the Huskies rallied to take the third in similar fashion, 25-13.  Trinity senior co-captain Wyllie Boughton (Andover, Mass.) served up four points in a row early in the third set to put the Bantams, ahead, 5-4, and the home team did not trail the rest of the way.

Conde led all hitters with 12 kills, while Trinity sophomore OH Hareena Johnson (Los Angeles, Calif.) added 11 kills.  Megan Gettings (Bristol, Conn.) paced Southern Maine with six kills.  Conde also had eight block assists and Boughton added seven, while senior co-captain OH Colette Scheffers (Flossmoor, Ill.) led the Trinity defense with 10 digs.  Sophie Lindsay (Sierra Madre, Calif.) had a team-high 16 kills, while Lauren Delissio (Hebron, Conn.) contributed 14 digs for the Huskies.

In the first match of the day, Simmons won the first set against Trinity, 25-22, but the Bantams rallied to take the second, 25-20.  The Sharks won, 25-13, in the third set and, 25-22, in the fourth to clinch the match.  Scheffers blasted a game-high 16 kills and 14 digs, while Johnson added 10 kills for Trinity.  Yang collected 25 assists and 10 digs, while Boughton had seven blocks and Conde added six.  Morgan Weeg (Goodyear, Ariz.) led the Sharks with 14 kills, while Faith Gray-Williams (Las Vegas, Nevada) had 25 assists, and Morgan Lauvray (Murrieta, Calif.) notched 15 digs and three aces.
